How to protect from Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is broken down into four stages: primary, secondary, latent, and late syphilis. If diagnosed in its early stages and treated properly, syphilis can be cured; however, having syphilis once does not prevent you from contracting it again. If acquired, syphilis can become a very dangerous disease not only for you, but for others as well. Eradicate the contraction, transmission and reoccurrence of syphilis by exercising safer sex, preventing high-risk sexual behaviours and by getting routine blood tests.

1. Curb your number of sexual partners: If you are sexually active, you can prevent syphilis by limiting your number of sexual partners. For some people, however, this might be unrealistic. Therefore, try to limit your sexual partners. If you have many sex partners, your risk of STIs increases. The more partners you have, the greater the risk.

Tip: Blue waffles disease transmitted through Sexually transmitted disease.

2. Take time to talk and get tested: The sex conversation is always an uncomfortable conversation, but it is one of the best ways to avoid contracting STIs (or STDs), like syphilis. Before you engage in sexual activity with a new partner, take time to talk with them about your sexual history, as well as their sexual history. You can make the conversation less inelegant and denunciatory by initiating the conversation and offering to relate your sexual history first.

3. Use condoms in a proper manner: It is important to use condoms when engaging in sexual activities. Every time you engage in sex, use a condom. Here are few steps to using condoms in the right way:

Check the package and make sure it is intact, and look for an expiration date before using the condom. Don’t ever use the condom if it has crossed its expiry date, as the latex can deteriorate and weaken, making the condom very likely to break.

  • Ensure that the condom does not have any tears or flaws.
  • Store your condoms in a cool, dry place. Do not store them in your wallet for long periods of time; the heat and friction can damage them.
  • Only use latex or polyurethane condoms. Do not use lamb skin condoms.
  • To prevent breakage, use lubricants that are water-based or silicone-based.
  • When wearing the condom, leave some gap at the end of the penis for semen to collect.
  • Never use more than one condom at an instance
  • Don’t ever use the same condom again.
